Distributed by definition, and continuous by obligation.

Power, water, desalination and the networks that distribute them run across geography rather than inside a building, and the service they carry is one people notice only when it stops. The estate is spread over sites that are hard to reach, and the obligation to keep running is regulatory as well as commercial.

This page describes how the sector works and which of Noble’s capabilities apply to it.

How the sector runs

The asset base is long-lived and geographically spread — substations, pumping stations, treatment plants, remote metering — and much of the technology serving it has to work at a site nobody visits weekly. Remote management is not a convenience; it is how the estate is operated at all.

Billing, metering, asset management and outage handling are separate systems that have to agree, and the customer-facing surface sits on top of all of them. A consumption figure that a customer disputes has to be traceable to a reading, which is a lineage problem before it is a service problem.

Continuity planning here is rehearsed rather than filed. A recovery plan that has never been tested is a document, and in a sector where the service is an obligation the difference between the two is the thing that gets audited.

Many sites, few people at them

Network, compute and monitoring installed where there is no local support, connected over links whose bandwidth and reliability vary by site. Provisioning and patching have to be remote and repeatable.

Metering to billing to dispute

A chain of systems that has to reconcile end to end, because the last step is a customer asking why a number is what it is.

Asset and maintenance records

Equipment with decades of service life, whose condition history is the basis for both maintenance planning and capital decisions.

Continuity that is exercised

Backup, replication and failover for systems the service depends on, with recovery objectives agreed and then actually measured against.
