Universities, colleges and school groups run to an academic calendar with two enormous peaks — enrolment and examinations — and long quiet stretches between them. Capacity, change windows and support demand all follow that shape, and a system that copes in March may not cope in September.

How the sector runs
The user population turns over substantially every year, and identity is the system that feels it. Thousands of accounts are created, entitled, moved between cohorts and eventually closed, and doing that by hand is where both the workload and the access risk accumulate.
The estate spans a student information system, a learning platform, finance, library, campus networks and a large device population that the institution owns and one it does not. Most of the difficult work is in identity, integration and the network — not in the teaching platform itself.
